The new OPI gelcolor is out and I just used, I'm not really a waitress, on my client. The new gelcolor comes in a polish bottle,as opposed to the 'tub' or 'pot' container. It went on beautifully and the color was even throughout the nail. The client was happy and left Holiday Ready!!

Hot Lips! Glitzy and Violent

Violent Lips

Check out these 'Hot Lips'. I first was introduced to Glitzy Lips at the Orlando Premiere show. It is a fun shiny lip application that will have your lips be the talk of the party and the application lasts for 8 hours or so. While you are 'Glitzed' you just have to be consious and not lick your lips. Well, as time would tell, there is another product to follow in their footsteps. These 'lip tatoos', as they call it, are called Violent Lips by Sugar factory. This design is called Candy Dots and they sell for $16 for 3 and last four to eight hours and even through kisses.
I think Glitzy Lips and the New Violent Lips are a type of lip application would be great for a fun event, photo op, or costume event. How Fun!

Lady Gaga's Eyes wide open

Did anyone see the Lady Gaga extreme makeup that she did on her eyes. It's her wild version of Betty Boop, I think. She painted her eyelids to look like a cartoonish caracter so when she closes her eyes you can see the full Betty Boop look. It is actually quite amusing and hard to keep from staring at.

Minx nails are a great way to add flair to your feet.
Lately, the Minx color, Gold Lightning, has been keeping me busy.

People have been stopping my clients in their tracks to see their toes and ask "where did you get those done?" It is perfect for the Florida weather and sandals.

I just recently finished a Gold MINX pedicure on the music artist Kriemhild Siegel from Germany. If you haven't heard her music before, look her up.

Congrats to the two winners of the Minx Pedicures at the Little Smiles benefit at Roger Dean Stadium. It was a huge turn out to raise money for terminally ill children. There was lots of raffle items, games for the kids, bounce house, helicopter candy drop, food and fun! A great time for a great cause!

Well, it's been showing up in various hues and now on the latest Vanity Fair cover featuring Lady Gaga, with a muted soft gray. Deborah Lippmann, (Celebrity Manicurist, Nail Lacquer developer, and beautiful singer) used the color 'Bad Romance' from her Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer Collection on Lady Gaga.

OPI Summer flutter collection

This is such a cute display. I am lovin' the butterfly- and the colors are pretty too!
The colors are: Wing it, Catch Me In Your Net, Flower-to-Flower, Flit a Bit. This is such a cute, fun collection that I know for sure it will be a hit at the salon. I am finding that all my 'conservative' selectors are reaching out-of-the-box for some fun for their toes, and so am I.

Clients keep coming in for the newest trend in nails- Gel nail Lacquer. Since this product first launched at the end of'09, I had to have it! . Clients are really thrilled that their nail color stays on for 3 weeks - even up to 4 weeks. Soon I will be attending the Premiere Orlando International Beauty Show in June and I can't wait to see more. At the show I will be looking at the Gel lacquer companies who are waiting to launch their line at the show. Even though I am VERY happy with the line I am currently using, it won't hurt to look at the others.
At the salon I am handing out a $5 discount coupon when you refer a friend and you will also get the same discount on your next visit. It is a great service and you leave with color on your nails without smudging and it last for weeks. How great is that?

OPI Shrek Forever After collection

I was so excited when I heard of the shrek collection by OPI. Ok, it was a bit odd -OPI and Shrek, but I was still curious to see the shades. They are definately different for an OPI collection, but I actually like them. OPI went 'out of the box' with these. Personally I have been doing the same and expanding my color selection for pedicures, nail art for new customers(since current clients tend to get Pink & White acrylics) and nail contests. They look like a lot of fun and can't wait to 'play'

Recently a few people have come to me with concerns with their nail disorders and needed guidance as to what to do and how to treat them.
One salon customer had nails that were splitting vertically, from the free edge towards the cuticle. This is Onychoschizia, commonly known as nail splitting. This may be caused by nail cosmetic (hardeners, polish,polish hardeners), and occupational exposure to chemicals (cement,alkali's,acids,salt sugar solutions). People taking oral medications made from vitamin A or people with skin diseases, such as lichen planus and psoriasis may also develop nail splitting.
Another form of Onychoschizia is splitting of the fingernails horizontally peeling along the free edge. Common cause of this is from prolonged wetting and drying of the fingernails., nail polish remover, trauma to fingernails. For this is it recommended to use a lotion containing alpha-hydroxy acids, wear gloves in cold weather, keep nails short and do not peel off nail polish. Taking a multi-vitamin will help increase nail growth which will lead to healthier nails.
Another nail disorder of concern was spoon shaped nails or Koilonychia.
Though this is sometimes an inherited condition, spoon shaped nails can usually be caused by an iron deficiency. To help correct this problem, usually an Iron supplement will help.
Taking care of your nails eating a well balanced diet and taking a multi-vitamin is key to maintaining healthy nails.

MMA and Your Safety!

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MMA!

. This is a hazardous substance when used on nails. It has been banned for use on nails by the FDA for over 25 years now because it is so hazardous to use.Some people have permanent nail loss from the use of this chemical. Others have had serious internal injuries and illnesses from a reaction to MMA
The 2 types of acrylic liquid monomer chemical used in our industry are:
-EMA - Ethyl Methacrylate (safe)
-MMA - Methyl Methacrylate. (not safe)
The CIR (Cosmetic Review Board) has tested the more commonly used EMA liquid and found it "safe enough to be used by the consumer" but recommend it to be used by trained professionals.

MMA is a very hard substance when cured. Removal and maintenance of a MMA enhancement by a un-trained technician can be dangerous and harmful to the natural nail plate. Some clients get 'Hot rings' - this is done when the technician drill excessively on the nail plate, sometimes THROUGH the nail plate into the nail bed (sometimes this causes permanent damage).

MMA doesn't soak off as easy as an EMA acrylic does. Most NON-satndard salons will use an extra nail tip and put it between the natural nail and acrylic and pop it off instead. OUCH! Imagine how many layers of your nail just went with it?

The only reason the discount salons use MMA is because it is so cheap to buy compared to what they are should to be using.

-A gallon of MMA liquid costs about $15-$25.

-A gallon of FDA approved, and safe monomer liquid costs an average of about $225 a gallon.

So how can you tell if your Tech is using MMA?

1). Usually a Lower price.

2). Tech uses a mask while applying

3). They don't soak off as fast as standard acrylics(so they PRY them off with another nail tip)
4). The cloudy milky white color.

5). Un-labeled containers.

-The last sign in the list above is the most important indicator. Nail technicians who come across artificial nails made with MMA-containing ingredients are usually surprised to hear how difficult it is to remove the product. The only way to remove the products is by filing with a very coarse abrasive or drills, which usually results in further damage to the client's nail plates and nail beds.

So make sure your salon is MMA FREE.
